Coaches Corner

A coach can be the most influential person in a child’s life. In AYSO, Positive Coaching is a fundamental philosophy because of the crucial role that a coach has. Coaching in AYSO is a chance to spend quality time with your own child but you’ll also provide an important role model for all the children on your team. In fact, the joy of coaching is so meaningful, that many AYSO coaches continue coaching long after their own children have moved on from AYSO. Soccer knowledge is a plus, but AYSO provides training and materials so that even a soccer novice can coach effectively by starting in the younger age divisions. Being a coach involves skills you probably already have in addition to specific soccer knowledge. If you are uncertain, try being an assistant coach. Your Region's Coach Administrator will be happy to try to match you up with somebody with a little more experience.

IMPORTANT POLICY AND GUIDELINE CHANGE

CHANGE IN MINIMUM PLAY RULE FOR POST SEASON  PLAY INCLUDING REGION 56 VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION TOURNAMENT and for SPRING SOCCER for Upper Divisions.

After further discussion and consideration,  Region 56 has made a guideline and policy change with regards to the minimum play rule FOR THE POST SEASON and for Spring Soccer in the Upper Divisions.

For the post season INCLUDING Region 56  Volunteer Appreciation Play offs and our Spring Soccer program,  the two quarter minimum play rule will be in effect for all U9 through U19 teams.  To clarify, this is contrary to what was discussed at the late season coaches meeting.

Teams must play every player a minimum of 2 quarters for each and every game and are not restricted by a requirement to rotate those players sitting 2 quarters evenly.   We are implementing the National Guidelines for the post season so this applies to all U9-U19 teams regardless of roster size.  This policy will also be applied to our Spring Soccer program in the upper divisions.

We understand some coaches may choose to rotate their players as to distribute evenly the time played however that will not be a requirement.  In other words, as long as each player has played a minimum of two quarters it is up to the coach who they sit each game.

To be clear, coaches still cannot sit a player any quarters as a means of punishment including for poor performance or for not showing up to practices, etc.  If a coach prefers to continue to rotate players evenly that is up to the discretion of each coach.

As with all changes it is possible there will be some growing pains and some resistance to this change so please be mindful and sensitive of this when applying this new policy.

IMPORTANT:  This only applies to post season play and our Spring program.

All teams must continue to comply with our ¾ guideline and the rotation of players evenly for teams that must sit a player for ½ game due to team roster size for the remainder of the regular fall season.
