The AYSO volunteer position of regional director of referee instruction is intended to implement, monitor, and maintain the AYSO Referee Training Program component at the regional level of the Assistant Referee, Referee, and Basic Referee training courses.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

The regional director of referee instruction is expected to:

  • Support the AYSO National Referee Program in both specifics and spirit;

  • Ensure all training within the region is in compliance with the AYSO National Referee Program curriculum and procedures;

  • Arrange for annual updates, clinics, courses, and the continuing education of regional volunteer referees at all levels;

  • Recruit and arrange for the certification of additional qualified instructors and instructor evaluators;

  • Work with the area and section directors of referee instruction to meet the ongoing training needs of the local referees;

  • Facilitate the activities of the referee instructors and referee instructor evaluators within the region;

  • Provide feedback to area, section, and national staff regarding curriculum, course content, and materials for referee instruction;

  • Communicate with all referees and referee instructors in the region on matters pertaining to changes and interpretations of the FIFA Laws of the Game and the AYSO Rules and Regulations; and

  • Serve as an official spokesperson for interpretation of the FIFA Laws at all regional sponsored events. (Confirm, as necessary, with the area/section directors of referee instruction or the AYSO FIFA Law Interpreter).

Qualifications and Desired Skills

To be considered for the position of regional director of referee instruction, the applicant must:

  • Successfully pass a screening, including a background check;

  • Annually submit a Volunteer Application Form and be approved as a volunteer in an AYSO region;

  • Be an AYSO referee instructor or higher;

  • Be an AYSO referee instructor evaluator;

  • Be familiar with the current curriculum and instructional components of the AYSO National Referee Program;

  • Demonstrate an unswerving commitment to the AYSO philosophy;

  • Have good organizational skills;

  • Have the ability to work with a large group of volunteers;

  • Have practical knowledge of the FIFA Laws of the Game, the AYSO Rules and Regulations; and

  • Be committed to the AYSO philosophy.
