Welcome to the Region 56 Referee information page. Referees are an integral part of a successful AYSO program. Some referee because they want to be involved with the kids; others because they love the game; some want to learn about the game and some for the great exercise! AYSO is a volunteer program and at the center of that program are our kids. Our kids deserve the best we can give them, and having quality people who care about our kids and providing a safe, fun and fair environment is paramount. The referee, according to Law 5 in the Laws of the Game, is the final authority and ensures this environment. What better way to help our kids than by becoming an AYSO referee?

“I can’t referee, I don’t know the game!” Try again, in 4 hours we will teach you the basics to be able to referee a U8 and under game. Give us an additional 6 hours, and we will dress you up and have you ready to AR (Assistant referee) a U9-10 match. And, when you feel ready, you can step onto the middle of the pitch and run a U9-10 match!

With some additional training we can have you doing U12 and higher matches.

And along the way, with an open mind, we can help you to hone your skills. We have several outstanding Intermediate and Advanced refs in region 56 who can help you improve your game.

“The parents will yell at me!” Has anyone ever yelled at you in a parking lot? Did anyone come to your aid? We do! The region stands behind our referees and abusive coaches or spectators are addressed. The coaches, other parents and referees are a team and work together to handle and avoid these situations. One rotten apple shall not ruin it for all others and especially our kids.

“I don’t have the time!” We all need to make time for our kids. About an hour a week is all it takes during the season.

Ok, now that we are out of excuses, we would like to extend a personal invitation to you to attend one of our spring or fall referee courses and start enjoying the most popular game in the world. You might be surprised at what you have been missing!
